Technique Comparison - Track Starts

The following seven photos illustrate the advantage of the PowerStarts height technique for the start over a more typical "flat" start dive.  Notice that both swimmers are using the Track Start, bit Lane 1 will achieve greater height in her start than Lane 2.

The swimmer in Lane 1 (left side of the photos) has a slower reaction to the starting signal.  Lane 1 also begins by rocking back on the starting platform which is costing her valuable response time.

Photo 1 Lane 1 is leaning too far back and is going to pull forward with her arms instead of the arms going up and out leading the way.
Photo 2 As these photos will show, Lane 1 comes from behind as she makes the investment in getting height versus being the first to the water.
Photo 3 Lane 1 is getting advantageous height and a good streamline.
Photo 4 Lane 1 is at the point of maximum height while Lane 2 is entering the water.
Photo 5 Lane 1 is just entering the water with a very nice angle of entry and a clean single hole. Lane 2 is already completely entered the water and is thrusting forward.
Photo 6

Lane 1 we see here that her legs have flopped over too far. They are not being used to kick as they enter the water.

The legs should be kicking down as they enter the water to add thrust to the underwater momentum.

We can still see that the momentum from the height and angle of entry carries the swimmer in Lane 1 ahead of the swimmer in Lane 2, even though Lane 1 was the last to enter the water.

 Another PowerStarts Secret

It is not who enters the water first that wins the start.  It's the momentum that is created and the path of least resistance to the momentum that wins.
