Vertical Jumping Factors

At the lowest point of the squat position, the body should snap-up with the arms leading the way as though the energy generated from the stretched muscles in the legs is going to be shot out of the fingers up towards the goal of the backstroke flags.

The toes don't have a lot of strength but they add to the projectile guidance by extending the distance of the trajectory and sending another surge of kinetic energy through the body.

Roller Coaster Dynamics

In ski jumping and roller coasters, changing the launch angle will change the direction and duration of flight.  Swimmers starting from a starting block also change the duration of flight by changing the launch angle.

A bigger change in direction can make a bigger acceleration.  The bigger the change in direction and the less time that change takes, the greater the acceleration which will also effect the force you have as you enter the water.

As the height of the start-dive increases there are significant increases in the depth of the dive. Steering by arching the back upon surface entry will keep the dive shallow and suddenly change the direction which will create an accelerated surge.

Reducing Drag During Glides

The shallower the depth of the dive entry, the faster the velocity. The optimum is between .4 and .9 meters. Don't go deep!!
